GCC to offer national WorkKeys system for job analysis and training
Guam Community College, in partnership with the Guam Department of Labor, is preparing to implement the WorkKeys system for Job Analysis, Assessment and Training on Guam. The system matches the skill levels of an individual with the skills needed for over 16,000 different occupations. It is a nationally recognized system which has been proven to reduce employee turnover, decrease training times for new employees, and increase employee productivity by ensuring those hired have the skills to do the job; something which a diploma or certification might not provide an accurate assessment of, according to Victor Rodgers, GCC Assistant Director of Continuing Education and Workforce Development.
GCC will be bringing in speakers from ACT Inc. from May 10 -12 for a series of informational briefings about WorkKeys for the business, community and educational leaders on Guam. Best known for the ACT college entrance exam, ACT Inc. is a nonprofit organization offering educational and workplace measurement and research services.
“Also important for Guam, WorkKeys has a key part to play for those who have dropped out (of high school) and need something which an employer can recognize,” said Rodgers. “This program comes with a portable certificate called the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC), which clearly identifies the skill levels of the person receiving the certificate and is recognized throughout the United States.” Rodgers says the certificate will be important for those who may have the skills and talent to perform a particular job, but who, for one reason or another, may not have had the opportunity to get the educational credentials that would otherwise be required for the job. Rodgers noted that the WorkKeys system also contains a component that allows for individual remediation, so that those who participate in the WorkKeys analysis and lack foundational skills have the opportunity to build up their skills.
Rodgers noted that the NCRC could potentially have a positive, far-reaching impact for Guam’s business environment. “GCC looks forward to working with the business and educational community, as well as the leadership on Guam, to present the program and to provide a forum for questions,” he said.
