General Facts: |
The ground dove could be recognized by its low moaning cry, which was heard early in the morning or late afternoon. |

Specific Habitat: |
Guam's limestone forests. |

Sources of Food: |
"pigeon's milk", small berries, fruit, seeds, and flowers. |

Predators in the Wild: |
Brown tree snakes. |

Economic Importance: |
They were very rare doves and was of great value to the chamorus. |

Threatening Factors: |
They were aggressive and would fight one another by attacking its head and neck. |

Preserving this Species: |
Reintroduce them to the wild if brown tree snakes can be controlled or eradicated. |

Additional Facts: |
The male dove, or "paluman apaka' " (white bird), had a chocolate brown body and wings. It got its name from its white head and breast. Female doves had shades of brown with no white. Males and female doves looked so different that Chamorus called the female "paluman fache' ". Fache' is the Chamoru word for mud or muddy. *A male and female built their nest high in a tall tree and both helped incubate the eggs. |
