Species: Green Sea Turtle
(Haggan). General
Facts: They are Native to our island
and also an Endangered Species. Specific
Habitat: Live in the ocean, but every
few years will migrate back to the beaches where they were
born.. Sources of
Food: They feed primarlily on Sponges
and therefore are most frequenty observed in harbors and
lagoons where Sponges are abundant. Predators in the
Wild: Larger fishes such as Sharks
etc... Economic
Importance: They attract tourists to our beautiful island of
Guam, and in other islands they are still used for
food. Threatening
Factors: They capture this species and
use their shells for decorative purposes.. They make
bracelets, pendants, and earings out of their
shells. Preserving this
Species: There is a law that says it's
illegal to capture, possess ,buy, sell, and/or transport it
to different places in the world. Additional
Facts: The female crawls ashore on a
sandy beach and uses her flippers to dig a large hole in the
sand above the higher-water line near some vegetation. She
lays about 100 eggs which she covers with sand. The eggs
take about 60 days to hatch. Haggan Karai still occasinally
nest here on Guam.
