GCC Community Service Opportunity: Guam Environmental Education Committee Volunteers needed for Liberation Day Carnival!

GCC is looking for more than a few good volunteers! GCC instructor Joni Kerr and GCC Asst. Communications Director Jayne Flores have volunteered as site leaders for the Liberation Day Parade and carnival, and they need your help! Site leaders are responsible for a certain area along the parade route, and/or for recruiting and training volunteers to man recycling atolls at the carnival. At the atolls, volunteers ensure that recyclables are properly sorted, bagged and stacked. To volunteer, or to find out more information about the effort, contact Jayne at 735-5638.
Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC)Dates: Aug. 3-4, 7-8, and 12-13, at the AALG Allied Health Center. The ENPC educates nurses on caring for acutely ill and injured children, and will include pediatric trauma and resuscitation. NOTE: Course is full, however another one will be offered in approximately three months.
Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC)Dates: July 27-28, July 31-Aug. 1, Aug. 10-11, 16-17, and 18-19, in the AALG Allied Health Center. The TNCC provides the learner with the core-level trauma knowledge and psychomotor skills experience in an interactive format. Instructor for both courses is Debra J Steveson RN, CEN, Clinical Educator for Emergency & Trauma Services for Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center in Colorado, and an International TNCC/ENPC instructor. The Emergency Nurses Association will issue certification upon successful completion of the course, and contact hours will be awarded. Call 735-5632 for more information. EPA Certified Renovator CourseDates: Aug. 7 & 14, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., GCC Technology Center Rm. 1107. In partnership with National Econ Corporation, the course provides contractors and companies with the opportunity to comply with a new federal regulation requiring anyone who disturbs lead based paint in Target Housing or Child Occupied Facilities built prior to 1978 to be certified and use lead-safe work practices or face harsh civil or criminal penalties. Instructor is Bruce Concepcion, a Certified Federal Lead Inspector and instructor with National Econ Corp., accredited by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to provide the required Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) certification training under a new federal regulation. GCC President Mary Okada on Thursday, June 3, presented scholarship checks from the Spero-Perez Memorial Scholarship Fund to Shian Marie Aricheta, a Criminal Justice major; Wanda Ililau, an Automotive Technology major, and Mary Ann Mendiola, a Computer Science and Criminal Justice major. The CACGP Summer Academy curriculum is designed to teach and/or enhance the specific content area skills in Math, English, ESL, Computer Ed, Character Ed, College Preparation and Chamorro. GCC receives federal grant to furnish Learning Resource Center Posted: May 10, 2010
The Guam Community College received word this morning from the Department of Interior that the college will receive nearly $320,000 from Interior’s Operations and Maintenance Improvement Program (OMIP) to supply its new Learning Resource Center with recyclable furniture and collateral equipment. The $4.3 million building, which will be the first LEED- certified building for the government of Guam, is being paid for through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. more

Guam Community College, in partnership with the Guam Department of Labor, is preparing to implement the WorkKeys system for Job Analysis, Assessment and Training on Guam. The system matches the skill levels of an individual with the skills needed for over 16,000 different occupations. It is a nationally recognized system which has been proven to reduce employee turnover, decrease training times for new employees, and increase employee productivity by ensuring those hired have the skills to do the job; something which a diploma or certification might not provide an accurate assessment of, according to Victor Rodgers, GCC Assistant Director of Continuing Education and Workforce Development. more

GCC Now an Official Microsoft IT Academy Posted: March 24, 2010
GCC is now an official Microsoft IT Academy and the first entity in Micronesia to become an authorized training and testing center for Microsoft Office 2007. Company employees can now be certified on island in any or all of these five applications: Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and PowerPoint. This certification is good worldwide! Classes will be offered starting this summer in three-day, 8-hour per day sessions. Class size will be limited to 12 persons per class. The cost for each class is $695 and includes a pretest to determine competency, a class book and a certification exam on the final day.
